05 February 2004 MEMBERS OF THE REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY, DAVIS DIVISION OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE Dear Colleagues, The call for the winter meeting of the Representative Assembly of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate is attached. The meeting is scheduled for 18 February 2004 at 3:10 PM in the MU II room of the Memorial Union. The call is posted on http://academicsenate.ucdavis.edu/repassembly.cfm A paper copy of the agenda is also available upon request from the Academic Senate Office in Voorhies Hall, room 301 (2-2231). I would like to call your attention to the agenda. The State of the Campus Address will be given by Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, as is customary at the winter Representative Assembly meeting. Although the Chancellor will touch on a variety of topics, there will be focus on complications resulting from the State budget proposals relating to fees and tuition, Outreach, reductions in enrollment and an anticipated change in the student/faculty ratio. Listen for comments on the Master Plan for Higher Education, facilities, recruitment efforts for faculty, staff and students, and the relations between UC and the City of Davis. The Chair's remarks will highlight some of the activities of the Universitywide Academic Senate. The Committee on Courses of Instruction and the Undergraduate Council have proposed revision of Davis Division Regulation 538, to allow final examination for on-line courses to be given on dead day as an alternative to examination during the last hour of the last day of finals. The Committee on Elections, Rules and Jurisdiction has proposed amendments to Davis Division Bylaw 121.B. The purpose of the proposed revision is to clarify the relative authority of the Faculties of the Schools and Colleges regarding curriculum, and over the establishment and discontinuation of academic programs. Graduate Council has requested approval of the use of the new Master of Advanced Study (MAS) degree title on the UC Davis campus, and specifically to establish a Master of Advanced Degree Study Program in Maternal and Child Nutrition. Authorization of the degree title requires approval by the Representative Assembly. The Report of the Committee on Committees shows the Academic Senate Committee appointments made since the October 2003 Representative Assembly meeting. The complete agenda package is being sent to departmental, at-large and ex-officio members of the Representative Assembly and to department chairs. Please check the membership list included with the meeting call to determine whether you are a member of the Assembly. All members are asked to attend meetings to enable the Assembly to accomplish its business-we must have a quorum for legislative actions. The meeting will start at 3:10 PM to ensure that we can complete business before 5:00 PM. The sign-in sheet will be available starting 2:45. It is important that any departmental representatives who are unable to attend ask their first or second alternate to attend in their place. |
