SPECIAL
MEETING OF THE DAVIS DIVISION OF THE ACADEMIC SENATE
Friday, May
17, 2002, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Room 6, Olson
Hall
A
Special Meeting of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate is called in
accordance with Bylaw 23 of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate.
President Atkinson has proposed that the University consider
dropping the SAT I as a required examination for undergraduate eligibility and
as a measure of ability in regards to admission. The Office of the President has also presented a study showing
that first-year success at UC can be predicted by a combination of the high
school GPA in University-approved subjects and scores on the SAT II. This study shows that the SAT I does not
improve the predictability of success in a significant way. As a consequence, the Board of Admissions
and Relations with Schools (BOARS) has recommended a policy regarding the
purposes and properties of admissions tests.
BOARS has also proposed that the University discontinue using the SAT I
and develop a new testing array. An
Executive Summary and Discussion paper (“The Use of Admissions Tests by the
University of California”) regarding the BOARS proposal can be found on the web
at http://www.ucop.edu/news/sat/boars.html. A number of related documents, including the
UCOP analysis, are available on the same site.
The purpose of this special meeting is to present background
information of interest to the faculty and to discuss the BOARS proposal. We will be joined at this meeting by
Professor Dorothy Perry, Chair of BOARS, from UCSF. In addition Saul Geiser from the Office of the President will
describe his analysis of SAT I date for UC.
We will allow ample time for questions, comments and discussion
following their presentations.
Subsequent to this meeting, the Representative Assembly will be asked to
take formal action on the BOARS proposal.
Please
note that the agenda of this special meeting is limited to the topics listed
above. In addition, Bylaw 23 does not
permit passage of formal legislation at a special meeting of the Division.
JEFFERY C. GIBELING, Chair
Davis Division of the Academic
Senate
