MEMBERS OF THE REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY

RE: October 30, 2001 Meeting

Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to forward the call for the next regular meeting of the Representative Assembly scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, 2001 at 3:00 in the MUII room of the Memorial Union.  This call is also posted http://academicsenate.ucdavis.edu/repassembly.htm.  Individuals may request a paper copy of the agenda from the Academic Senate Office (2-2231).

This will be the first regular meeting of the Representative Assembly for the 2001-2002 academic year.  As is our custom, we will hear the perspectives of the new student leaders, Tiqula Bledsoe, President of the ASUCD and Claire Vollotton, Chair of the GSA.

Several standing committees of the Division are required to file their annual reports for presentation at this meeting; these are appended to the meeting call.  I particularly want to call your attention to the report of the Committee on Admissions and Enrollment.  At a Special Meeting of the Representative Assembly on October 9, 2001, we discussed proposed changes to systemwide admissions policies that would enable campuses to use a comprehensive review in selecting applicants.  We also discussed proposed local admissions procedures developed by the Committee on Admissions and Enrollment.  Since a quorum was not available when the Assembly was prepared to vote, we were unable to take formal action on either item.  However, it is critical that we act on the proposal from our Committee on Admissions and Enrollment in order to have admissions procedures in place if the Board of Regents approves the systemwide changes.  I urge you to read that section of the meeting call, as well as the additional information in the October 9 meeting call, and be prepared to vote on this matter.  In addition, the Distinguished Teaching Award committee will announce the 2001 award recipients at this meeting.  As always, it will be a pleasure to honor the outstanding accomplishments of our colleagues.  That committee will also announce a new award for distinguished mentoring of graduate students.  Lastly, the final report of the Special Committee on Transportation and Parking will be received and the Assembly will be asked to take action on the recommendations contained therein.

This complete agenda package is being sent to departmental, at-large and ex-officio members of the Representative Assembly and to department Chairs.  I urge you to check the membership list included with the meeting call to determine whether you are a member of the Assembly.  We need all members to attend meetings to enable the Assembly to accomplish its business.  This year, we have shifted the meeting time to start at 3:00 PM to ensure that we can complete our business before 5:00 PM.  The sign-in sheet will be available at 2:45 and roll will be called at the start of the meeting.  Please plan to arrive on time so that we may start and end the meeting on schedule; your prompt arrival also shows respect for the schedules of your colleagues.  It is important that any departmental representatives who are unable to attend ask their 1st or 2nd alternate to attend in their place.

The new academic year promises to bring challenges as we work on the many issues before the Senate.  I look forward to working with you and to seeing you at the Assembly meeting.

Sincerely,

JEFFERY C. GIBELING, Chair

Davis Division of the Academic Senate
