MEMBERS OF THE REPRESENTATIVE ASSEMBLY
RE: February 29, 2000 Meeting
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to forward the call for the next regular meeting of the Representative Assembly scheduled for Tuesday, February 29, 2000 at 3:30 in MUII.
There are several important items on the agenda to which I would like to draw your attention. First, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Robert D. Grey will provide an overview of our current academic planning process, including planning for enrollment growth, the status of academic plans for each college or school, the 10 major campus initiatives and the processes for allocating faculty positions. As I'm sure you know, the campus will be hiring as many as 1000 faculty and enrolling an additional 6,000 students over the next ten years. These will be enormously challenging tasks and will impact the character of the campus for many years. Provost Grey's presentation will enable you to better understand the impact of these changes on your program and how you can contribute to a successful outcome.
We will also hear the annual report of the Faculty Research Lecture committee, which serves as the official announcement of the name of the individual who has been selected to receive this distinctive honor. In addition, the Committee on Committees has made a number of appointments to replace faculty who were unable to complete their service on Senate committees. These require Representative Assembly approval. I also call your attention to their informational report regarding the members appointed to the Special Committee on Academic Personnel Processes. Finally, the one piece of legislative business that requires Representative Assembly approval is a request for diploma notation of designated emphases completed by Ph.D. students.
The call for the February 29th Representative Assembly meeting will be posted on the Academic Senate web site (http://www.mrak.ucdavis.edu/senate/index.htm). Individuals may request a paper copy of the agenda from the Academic Senate Office (2-2231).
I encourage you to attend this meeting to participate in the campus planning process and to recognize the accomplishments of the Faculty Research Lecturer. I look forward to seeing you on the 29th.
Sincerely,
JEFFERY C. GIBELING, Chair
Davis Division of the Academic Senate
