Annual Report of the Committee on Emeriti/ae

To: The Representative Assembly of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate

In the 2000-2001 academic year the Emerit/ae Committee dealt with two

matters.

In December, an Emeritus faculty member called our attention to the fact

that the list of Academic Senate titles included in the "Guidelines for

Membership in Graduate Programs" approved by the UCD Graduate Council in

May of 1998 did not include "Profesor Emeritus/a."   We called that omission

to the attention of the Graduate Council, along with the fact that in June

of 1998 the campus administration approved the use of the title "Research

Professor" for retired faculty who have been recalled to active duty

for research or for research and teaching.  The Graduate Council then

revised the Guidelines in question, making individuals who hold either of

these titles eligible for consideration for membership in Graduate Groups.

In March we were invited by the Office of the Chancellor to suggest

revisions in a Directive on "The Rights and Privileges of

Emeritus/a Professors at UC Davis,"  which Chancellor Vanderhoef has

issued annually since 1994.  Since that time there have been a number of

studies of such matters, most recently in the summer of 1999 by a Task

Force chaired by Dean Mark McNamee.  We submitted our proposed revised

Directive to the Chancellor's Office on April 24, 2001.   We have been told

that with the inclusion of a cover letter by the Chancellor, it will be

forwarded to Deans, Directors and Department Chairs next Fall.

                                             Respectfully submitted,
