2000-2001 ANNUAL REPORT

COMMITTEE ON UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS,

HONORS AND PRIZES

TO:      The Representative Assembly of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate

The Committee met on November 8, 2000, during the Fall Quarter to organize for the year. At this meeting, committee members volunteered for special subcommittee assignments performed during the academic year. A Winter Quarter orientation meeting was held January 24, 2001, for new members to acquaint themselves with the application evaluation process.  The Committee will meet again during the Spring Quarter to review the year’s activities and make recommendations for improvements. The meaning of the term “scholarship” at UC Davis will be discussed. Most of the Committee’s work is carried out by members individually evaluating scholarship candidates’ applications.

For the 2001-2002 award cycle, 28,539 students applied for scholarships: 1,262 continuing UCD students, 4,482 transfers, and 22,795 high school seniors.  The Committee subjectively evaluated all complete continuing and transfer applicants.  High school applicants were evaluated on the basis of their grades and test scores alone, with the exception of some Educational Opportunity Program students.

At the November 8, 2000 meeting, after reviewing scholarship award data, the Committee requested greater clarification for male versus female awards and the proportionally higher need-based awards in the College of A&ES compared to other Colleges. This issue will be further evaluated when the transition and staffing of the Scholarship Office is completed and the 2001-2002 awarding cycle is concluded.

At the January 24, 2001 meeting the new Scholarship Director, Cathy Pickett, was introduced to the Committee.  Her first day was January 15, 2001.  There was discussion regarding the adjustment of reading scores and it was decided that an average score of “3” needs to be strongly encouraged to all readers.

There were no additional policy issues of significance addressed by the Committee during the year.

Respectfully submitted,

Kent Pinkerton, Chairperson
