2002-2003
ANNUAL REPORT
COMMITTEE
ON PUBLIC SERVICE
To: The Representative Assembly of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate
The committee, after reviewing nominations for the Distinguished Scholarly Public Service Award, selected three recipients for 2002-2003: Professor Bill Ong Hing, School of Law; Professor Jerold Last, School of Medicine; and Professor Eldridge Moores, Geology Department. The awards were officially announced at the Representative Assembly meeting on May 7, 2003. A luncheon honoring the recipients will be held on May 21, 2003.
The committee approved a University Extension Certificate Program in Children and Family Services. The committee concluded that proposed program was very well conceived and worthwhile. The committee was also impressed with the caliber of the people who will be teaching the courses.
Provost Virginia Hinshaw approved the committee’s request for funding to create a brochure and website to recognize and promote public service. The project is almost completed. We should be receiving the brochure from the printer next week, and the website should be on-line by the end of the month.
A subcommittee completed its annual review of a sample University Extension academic credit courses for the 2001-2002 academic year. The subcommittee concluded that “University Extension provides and excellent service to the public by providing high-quality courses taught by well-qualified instructors. . . In our opinion, University Extension is fulfilling an educational mission that serves the public exceptionally well.” A subcommittee has been appointed to perform this review for the 2002-2003 academic. As in the past, this review will sample courses across the departments of University Extension in which most credit courses are offered.
