Annual Report: UC Davis Academic Senate Library Committee

The Committee will have met twice during the year.

Winter Quarter (3 December 2002).

With the approval of the Committee, the Chair responded to Graduate Council requests for analyses of the adequacy of library resources to support proposed Ph.D. programs in Criminal Justice Sciences and in Linguistics.

The Committee heard reports from the library administration on the following:

The WASC Preparatory Review visit in December; new staff appointments; administrative unit reviews; patron service surveys; and library instruction sessions.

Further, the Committee was informed on the development of system-wide policies for shared materials and on the Collection Management Initiative project.

An item of major concern was the assessment of how the budget reductions that have been mandated—both the one-time across the board reduction and the permanent budget reduction target—will affect the General Library. The Committee expressed particular alarm at the consequences for the collections budget.

The meeting concluded with a demonstration of the new online catalogue, Harvest.

Spring Quarter (2 June 2003).

The agenda includes the following reports: NRLF Phase III progress; budget; collections; the new Library and Education building at the Sacramento Medical Center; library instruction; results of the service survey; and technology updates.

Discussion will be devoted to two matters that have generated faculty complaints: dissatisfaction with the Harvest Catalogue; and the proposed massive cancellation of print journal subscriptions in favor of electronic versions.

Lastly, on 9 June in Oakland, the Chair will attend the meeting of the University Committee on Library. The significant agenda items are: system-wide planning for libraries and scholarly information; and the impact of the state budget cuts.
