CAMPUS ANNOUCEMENT
Dear UCD Research Community,
I write to advise you of the steps that the Office of Research (OR) intends to take in order to comply with the July Regents action that mandates unpaid furlough time to address the university’s extreme financial emergency.
In addition to the (11) campus closure dates announced on August 28, 2009 by Chancellor Katehi and Provost Lavernia, the Office of Research administrative units will close for another (7) working days in order to generate the necessary salary savings to met OR’s mandatory budget reductions.
These additional OR-designated closure dates are:
· Friday, October 16, 2009
· Wednesday, November 25, 2009
· Friday, March 19, 2010
· Friday, April 16, 2010
· Friday, May 21, 2010
· Friday, July 16, 2010
· Friday, August 20, 2010
The Office of Research administrative units that will be closed on the OR-designated dates include:
· Sponsored Programs Office (SPO)
· Institutional Review Board (IRB)
· InnovationAccess (Technology Transfer & Business Development)
· Research Compliance & Integrity
· Interdisciplinary Research Support (IRS)
· OR Business Administration
o OR Human Resources
o OR Information Systems & Support (ISS)
o OR Finance
o OR Communications
Additionally, many OR Research Units (i.e., Organized Research Units, Organized Research Projects, Central Facilities and Special Research Programs) are funded in part from extramural funds and have the option of using the OR-designated dates or scheduling alternative dates to meet furlough savings targets.
During the OR-designated furlough dates, there will be no administrative services available to the campus from the OR administrative units listed above. The interruption in campus service will mean that the offices will be closed for business and there will be no staff available to answer phone calls, respond to email, provide policy advice or otherwise respond to requests for service. We regret the necessity of taking this action, however, mandating a set number of specific dates, will allow OR to manage the service down-time is such a way that allows OR administrative units to run at full capacity during the remainder of the furlough period.
We ask that should a major deadline occur on an OR-designated furlough day, researchers and community member are asked to contact the designated unit to make arrangements. For example, if a proposal deadline occurs on an OR-designated furlough date, researchers are asked to submit their proposal material early to allow sufficient time for the proposal to be reviewed and submitted to the sponsor at the latest on the day before the OR-designated closure date to meet the deadline.
While we have taken care to identify dates that would be least disruptive to those that we serve (e.g. sponsor deadlines, standing IRB meeting dates, etc.) we know that any disruption in service is an inconvenience to those that we serve. We know that the rest of the campus is experiencing similar conditions and we appreciate in advance your support.
