Davis Division Review of Administration "Growth/Bloat"
Dear Colleagues,

I am sure you are aware of the claims in the press and elsewhere of “bloat” in the administration of the University of California. One definition of bloat is a more rapid rate of growth of the administration as compared to other sectors of the University, as reflected in statistical data available for such comparisons.

On behalf of the Davis Division of the Academic Senate, I have assured Regent Russell Gould, Vice Chair of the UC Board of Regents, that the Davis Division of the Academic Senate will address this issue. I have formed a Senate task force to investigate the administrative growth rate on our campus using UCOP data and other sources as appropriate to evaluate growth as well as the forces driving the faster rate of growth of campus administration. I will Chair the task force which will be comprised of Bob Powell, Chair-elect, Pablo Ortiz, Vice Chair, Ann Orel, Chair of the Committee on Planning and Budget and the Chairs of each of the Faculty Executive Committees of the Schools and Colleges: Jamal Abedi (SOE), Yvette Flores-Ortiz (L&S), Thomas Joo (SOL), Michael Maher (GSM), Diana Myles (CBS), Ron Phillips (COE), Fern Tablin (SVM), Richard Tucker (SOM) and Jeffrey Williams (CAES). This task force will make a report to the Representative Assembly at our meeting June 6th.

Sincerely,

Linda F. Bisson, Chair
Davis Division of the Academic Senate
